Starting over is not going backwards

In early 2022 I moved to the UK with a plan. I was already years into my CA qualification in Pakistan, and like most people who move abroad, I had a clear picture of where I would be within a few years. I thought I had everything mapped out. The reality was very different.

The biggest decision I faced was stepping away from a qualification path I had invested years in, and starting again with ACCA. At the time it felt like a setback. It felt like moving backwards while everyone around me moved forwards.

What nobody tells you about starting over is that the qualification is the smallest part of it. Moving to a new country means rebuilding your life from the ground up: learning to navigate unfamiliar systems, adapting to a different culture, balancing responsibilities back home while trying to establish yourself somewhere new, and carrying expectations that stay invisible to everyone around you.

There were months when things took longer than they should have. Opportunities that did not materialise. Moments when I questioned whether I was moving in the right direction at all.

A new period does not start from nothing. It starts from the balance brought forward.

Accounting gave me the frame that eventually made sense of it. When a financial period closes, the balance sheet does not reset to zero. Its balances carry forward into the new period. The years I spent on CA were not written off when I started ACCA. They were the balance brought forward: the discipline, the technical grounding, the habit of sitting difficult exams under pressure.

Starting over does not erase the record. It opens a new page that carries everything you already are.

The journey since has taught me patience when I wanted immediate results, resilience when things did not go to plan, and to measure progress against my own position rather than anyone else's. And it strengthened my trust in Allah's plan when my own plans seemed to be falling apart.

Along the way the milestones arrived: an MSc in Accounting and Finance with Merit, ACCA finalist, and a career in assessment where the habits formed in finance turned out to matter most. But the qualifications are not what I value most from these years. The greatest growth has been internal. More patient. More resilient. Able to keep moving without needing to know exactly how everything works out.

The destination does not look like the picture I drew in 2022. The person walking towards it is someone I am grateful to be.
